AVGCSRVX.EXE HOGGING CPU

Postby baldeagle812 » Wed Jan 28, 2009 7:31 am

I have a problem with AVG scans.

My system is Dell Dimension 4700 3 Ghz with 4 GB memory, running Windows XP Pro /SP3.

AVG is 8.0.23.

When AVG does a scan AVHCRSVX hogs about 90% of cpu and remaining AVG processes taking the remainder thereby making my pc completely unusably for at least 2 hours.

I have googled this and followed various instructions but all to no effect.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled. but everything I have tried seems to work only until the pc is rebooted.

Is it my system, which has been rebuilt from scratch recently in a bid to resolve this issue, or is AVG 8.0 such a rubbish program. When I had AVG 7.5 everything was great

First of all, the latest version is 8.0.233 (not .23), so make sure you have that installed (www.avg.com/download).

If you do, then the next thing to check is the scanning priority. You can adjust this by opening AVG, clicking Computer scanner>Choose your scheduled scan and click Edit>Click the How to Scan tab>Adjust the Scan process priority slider to Automatic or Slow scan.

Hi. I too have the same problem.

AVGCSRVX.exe runs at 12 noon every day and hogs my pc for up to 2 hours. The scheduled scan is set for 4.00 am each day. I have followed your instructions and its still running, even when I reboot.
Any suggestions??

Check the properties of the scheduled scan and you can adjust the priority of it. By default it is Automatic but you can give it a High priority or a Low priority by using the slider either left or right (left for lower and right for higher).

See if changing it to lower priority helps with CPU useage.

AVGCSRVX.EXE will consume most of your CPU durng the scan. Set it to run in the middle of the night. You do not have to be logged on for it to scan and it should be done by the time you wake up. I start mine at 1:00am and it is usually done 2-3 hours later.

If you need to use your machine one night that late, just right click on the scanner in the system tray and pause all scans. Don't forget to start the scan again when you are finished your work.

Also, keep in mind that AVG uses your CPU if it is idle - which is intentional. Otherwise, a scan would take forever.

I just recently started having this issue once avg updated to 8.5. I have my scheduled scans to happen at night when I am not using my computer, however, since updating to 8.5 this process starts at 9:00 am and grinds my system down to a slow crawl, utilizing almost all my cpu. I try to kill the process and it respawns itself, I try and quit avg and it still scans, the only option I had was to uninstall and reboot. I really like avg and never had this problem until 8.5, why is this process running during its non-scheduled hours? I understand that scans will utilize cpu cycles, however, this should only happen during scheduled scans, even so, I noticed that when avg does run a scheduled scan that the tray icon changes to have a 'play' icon indicating it is scanning, when avgcsrvx.exe starts at 9:00am the tray icon does not indicate a scan, so why is this even running? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

AVG may be checking for updates, or scanning something else. Hard to saying without parsing log files - you may want to contact AVG support.

PIta01 - avgcsrvx.exe is part of the Resident Shield component of your AVG Anti-Virus program. This is neither part of the update nor the scheduled scan process. Upon research of the process and component you can find:

"The Resident Shield is the monitoring portion of AVG anti-virus program. It runs continuously to monitor your computer for possible viruses and infections. If it detects anything, you will receive an alert indicating the problem and the suggestion to run the anti-virus program. The resident shield does not remove viruses though, just warns you that it has found something. You have to run an anti-virus program to remove it or find it yourself and remove it."

This is why you still see that process running.

Has anybody got a real answer to this problem? it only seems that it happens to some computers running the same version with the same settings across the board on nearly identical systems in my environments.

Same thing happens here, I noticed it a while ago when using version 8.5.

I updated avg today and have now version 9.0697. Nothing changed: I see 4 instances of AVGCSRVX.EXE running, using almost all my resources. I booted up an hour ago and have auto-scanning disabled.

My pc specs.
Del 8400 4Gb Ram/3.2Ghz WinXP SP3.

I guess there is a real problem here.

I would re-install AVG using the latest download from http://www.avg.com/download and using our guide here:

uncheck the option: scan for tracking cookies in the resident shield options, fixed it for me (running avg 9 on win 7)

Deleting my IE cache fixed it for me. No scans were running and IE was not running and it was still using like 50% in a dual core processor, I started IE and deleted the IE cache (must of been a lot, it took like 10 minutes) and now both avgcsrvx.exe processes are using 0%.
