Heur.dropper detected by AVG

Postby Edgardo » Tue May 31, 2011 8:17 pm

Tonight ran AVG and it found "heur.dropper" and "heur" within the HP Games which were preloaded on this Compaq computer when it was manufactured in 2006, but games have never been run. AVG moved these to the virus vault. I did a search but came up inconclusive whether it's a threat or a false positive. See attached screenshot. Please advise.

I posted yesterday AVG found and moved this "heur.dropper" to the virus vault, I got another popup today this time AVG caught it elsewhere and again supposedly took care of it by moving to the virus vault. Please advise!

You can test to see if it's real at www.virustotal.com. If not, send the suspected file to virus@avg.com.

Thanks I right-clicked on it and sent to AVG for analysis. We shall see. I predict if they contact me, they will have me collect all sorts of data, sometimes instructions conflicting with that they told me to do before, and attempt to send it, all way over this user's head. They seem to assume people who use AVG are computer experts that can do all this manual stuff. Not me, I'm just a consumer who wants to believe I am "protected" like it says

Not sure how to send a file from the virus vault to virustotal. Doesn't virus vault encrypt it so it's no good except to AVG?

I think you'd have to remove it from the vault in order to test it with virustotal.com.

Edgardo I have had the same experience today. I was away yesterday so the computer has been off line
I updated and ran AVG which found 29 instances of 'heur dropper' and 'heur' in the never used Packard Bell Games pre installed on this computer.
4 cases were sent to the vault, in 25 cases the files were too big to be dealt with and remained active.
I have just down loaded the latest update and scanned again .. zero infections.
Was there something in the updates over the last couple of days that triggered a false positive in the games room ?

Thanks for that, Clunk. Now at least I know I am not alone! AVG hasn't caught any more occurances here since I posted 2 days ago. And AVG never got back to me via email as requested when I sent the file in question for their analysis.

Packard Bell? You're on a 10 year old computer? :P

:D Packard Bell although it quit US of A in 2000 is still a strong European brand, a subsidiary of Acer.
 I too have not received any response from 'AVG virus laboratory' following my initial submissions. I shall not hold my breath. No reinfections reported.

They don't always reply when you submit something - they just incorporate it into the next def update.

I finally got rid of this by removing all HP games in safe mode and running AVG in safe mode also.

Did it just happen to you or was it about a month ago?
