Major Issue With 9.0.851

Postby bstickney » Fri Jul 23, 2010 2:55 pm

We recently experienced a near melt-down on our network after the 9.0.851 update was installed on our machines with AVG Business. Essentially, all Windows user profile information gets deleted and a ton of Windows File Protection messages appear in the event viewer. We have narrowed the problem down to AVG 9.0.851 and a specific version of a monitoring software we use called SONAR by Awareness Technologies.

The monitoring software can be found here: http://www.interguardsoftware.com/sonar.html

The version of that software that is causing the issue is 5.4.0.722

AVG doesn't show that it detects anything, however the Online Shield will show an inactive state. Upon reboot, everything is gone. We've notified the other vendor in question and I figured we'd let you know as well.

I haven't heard of this, and we have thousands of machines using AVG Business without issue. What makes you think AVG is a cause, and not just the SONAR software?

I don't doubt that the problem is with SONAR. However, the issue didn't appear until the 9.0.851 update - which is when every computer with that version of SONAR experienced this issue. It seems safe to assume that there is some interaction between AVG 9.0.851 and SONAR 5.4.0.722 that is causing this to happen. Prior to the 9.0.851 update, we were running that version of SONAR for close to a year without incident. There were no other changes to the machines.

Something interesting to note - when attempting to perform a full scan after receiving the 9.0.851 update, AVG stated that the scan completed in about 90 seconds when it normally takes 45 minutes or more. Immediately after the scan "finished", the Online Shield started throwing errors and all of the profile information on the computer was wiped.

Well I'd remove AVG from a machine with the issue and perform normal functions on the machine for a while, and make sure you engage SONAR in some way, and see if there are any issues. Also try removing SONAR from a machine with AVG on it and see if the issues persist there. Then you can at least narrow down which is the cause, or if they are conflicting.
