Hello, since the upgrade to version 9.0 the avgchsvx.exe run without end and slows my computer down, just like the resident shield..... and it take always to read my hard drive for no reason. Nothing about this process is visible and no try icon is visible!!!!

Only uniinstall avg can stop the process, the process is not killable!!

Im angry about and going to uniinstall avg again until i get any solution for this problem.

No, the problem exists just since version 9.0 and its not the AVGCSRVX.EXE, since 9.0 run the AVGCHSVX.EXE in background without any tray symbol and without any information for users. The AVGCHSVX.EXE need 10-30% cpu, but is reading hdd like while a scan all the time, but nobody see anything about, only in windows task manager u can see that the AVGCHSVX.EXE making some evil at the PC.

Try rebooting, don't do anything for 10 minutes but watch the process in task manager and see if it maintains that level of usage.

At time i turned back to 8.5 and i try to test some other antivirus programs....
but anyway - at time i have nevertheless a burning question:
What do the AVGCHSVX.EXE ??
And by the way: The AVGCHSVX.EXE was running after hours in past of the installation. I guess with 10 mins is there nothing done.

I was thinking about that this AVGCHSVX.EXE maybe check my hdd in order of wolfgang schäuble......... because maybe im a terrorist...

The AVGCHSVX service is running in the background for the first few hours (depending on how many files you have on your system) to fill the cache. It is running with low priority so it should not slow down your other apps. And after the cache is fully populated, the process will automatically minimize its CPU usage.

It certainly does slow things down. I don't know about CPU usage, but for over two hours it kept the hard-disk working continuously such that nothing else could get much of a look in. There was no warning of this at the time of installing 9.0, and no indication of what was happening as it proceeded. It was only by virtue of finding this thread on another PC that I left it to continue rather than aborting. The same sort of scan seem to sometimes happen now after booting up, fortunately only for a minute or two -- again no information unless you look at processes in Task Manager and see that avg processes are very active. If that's low priority, I'd hate to see it in high priority.

Probably so, but I don't remember it being described in such a way that we might as well go for a walk in the park for two hours while it churns away.

Agreed. I haven't experienced this myself, but I can see how it could happen.

I have had the same problems - I think i have found the fix. Open the interface then tools-advanced options - schdules. There are 3 different schedules. I found in either the virus or the program update the time was set for 2 pm. I changed that to 12am. While I was doing this the scan stopped & reported it found & fixed 6 threats. Later I checked the scan history & it wasn't there. The scan history seems to only show the virus scans.

I'm not sure even that does it. There appears to be a fourth 'cache' related scan, over which they give you no control and no information, which runs when it likes.

Indeed - I too have this same problem after upgrading to 9.0. It is hammering both the CPU and Disk. I kill the process and it returns. It is not a scheduled process which can be tuned via the AVGGUI. Perhaps it is the optimizer setting which was accidentally selected by clicking on it with my laptop touch pad while reaching for another window. It would be a nice enhancement/bug fix to have the ability to control this optimizer setting once it is initially set? Perhaps I can search the registry for where it is set at.

Suggestions on how to control this behavior before I'm forced to uninstall the application would be much appreciated.

it was slowing my computer too. ever since I switched to avg9.
no option to deactivate it
no information about it.
I tried to lower the priority in ever scan option i saw, and no results.
I tried to lower the process priority and no luck. "not allowed"

so i terminated the process ... and it came back again.

So... I have no time to deal with this kind of issues, so i made this batch file:

YouWillGoAway.bat
:again
del /f /q avgchsvx.exe
md avgchsvx.exe
echo you will never get back > avgchsvx.exe/trully.txt
goto again

I placed into the folder where avgchsvx.exe is.
I ran it.
Then I terminated the process. ... presto. I got my HD and my CPU back.

I HATE new software versions doing things with out notifying the user... ... with out thinking on immediate consequences.

my computer was in fact faster when i switched to avg9. ( smaller memory footprint. in comparison to avg8.5 )

I wll test other free antivirus program in a sandbox computer I have. just in case.

I've already pointed out that this process, AVGCHSVX.EXE, is just the optimization scan running after installation to fill the cache in order to improve the scheduled scan speed. It can take quite a long time to run depending on how many files you have, and if you stop it before it finishes. I'm going to lock this topic in order to try and keep it on-topic.
