AVG Update Manager - General Error

Postby egpk1331 » Wed Jan 28, 2009 6:03 pm

AVG 8 Internet Security is reporting Update Manager failing with "General Error". I have tried uninstalling AVG, downloading the latest version, and reinstalling it. It appeared to work for about 24 hours then came back with the same error.
Any suggestions.
Thanks

Another user recently had the same issue and here is what AVG told them to do:

- Please open the settings of "Update Manager" component:
- Open the AVG User Interface (for example by clicking on the AVG icon
on your desktop).
- Choose "Advanced settings" from the "Tools" menu.
- Select the "Update" item.
- Select the "Manage" tab and click on the "Delete temporary update
files" button.

-Update AVG Program

I too have been receiving the "General error." when updating and I tried the method of deleting the temporary update files but all I get is:

Deleting temporary files has failed.
Specified file was not found.

Earlier whenever I tried to update it would tell me to restart however everytime I restarted my laptop it would prompt me to restart again and there would still be no update!

What can I do? :(

Try downloading the latest installation file from - www.avg.com and then run a Repair on your program to see if that fixes the issue.

If a repair does not work your best bet is to do a complete uninstall, then reinstall the program.

this happens constantly on one of my w2k machines, and it turns out the problem was the filesystem (fat32). after conversion to ntfs all is working as expected

I am encountering this same error, I have tried to clear my temporary update data, a repair and two fresh installs, nothing has helped. I am also unable to update manually.

Any help would be appreciated, I don't want to switch to a different AV program if I don't have to.

Thank you

"Simply Uninstall the AVG Free and Upgrade "

Why would anyone pay for software, that's currently giving them problems? Not me.

I'm having the same problem, I'm starting to wonder if they make it do that on purpose to pressure people into registering. Have you found a solution as of yet, or did you switch to a different software?

Re: AVG Update Manager - General Error

I started getting the general error message when I tried to update the data files for AVG 2010 Free Edition, having used the previous ones since inception very successfully. So, I decided to update to 2012 instead.

I could not delete the old version , update to the new, get datafile updates without having to reboot (which seemed to get rid of the general error until the next attempt to get the new datafile, so quite a pain)

For this error resolution(I am using AVG 2012 Now) I had to follow these steps. PC is currently running Windows XP SP2

So, OPEN the COMMAND PROMPT (START/ PROGRAMS/ ACCESSORIES). Note the first two commands typed in did not give any response, just moved to the next line, having executed the command. The final two commands did bring a response message to verify the command given.

First, you ensure the MS Windows Installer service is correctly installed: Remember to include the space before the forward slash. Typing is case sensitive, as entered below, by typing:

msiexec /unregister

REMEMBER THE SPACE BEFORE THE FORWARD SLASH

Press ENTER on the KEYBOARD

Next, type in

msiexec /regserver

remembering the space before the forward slash and press RETURN again

Next, you need to ensure the Windows Installer service is not disabled by typing

NET STOP MSISERVER

YES, In CAPITALS, then press enter,

then NET START MSISERVER

again pressing enter.

Close the COMMAND PROMPT window and try your required update again. PLEASE NOTE- I decided to delete the old version, which I could not do before when I tried, which worked and I was able to install the newest version, 2012 after that. I dare say if I had just tried to update the older version this should have worked also, I just tried the delete first.

Hope this helps.
